Public Works Project of the Year Awards

The OPWA Public Works Project of the Year Award was established to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer, and the contractor who, working together complete public works projects.

Awards are given in four divisions:

1. Projects less than $2 million

2. Projects of $2 million to $10 million

3. Projects of $10 million to $50 million

4. Projects more than $50 million

From Five (5) Categories:

1. Structures - to include public structure preservation/rehabilitation, municipal buildings, parks, etc.

2. Transportation - to include roads, bridges, mass transit, etc.

3. Environment - to include treatment and recycling facilities, landfill reclamation project, etc.

4. Historical Restoration/Preservation - to include historical restoration, preservation and adaptive reuse of existing buildings and structures and facilities, etc.

5. Disaster or Emergency Construction/Repair - to include the techniques and timing for safety, community relations, environmental protection, adverse conditions and additional considerations.

Small Municipality and First Nations Communities Public Works Project of the Year Award

The OPWA Small Municipality Public Works Project of the Year Award was established (2010) to promote excellence in the management and administration of public works projects by recognizing the alliance between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer and the contractor who, working together, complete public works projects for municipalities with populations of 25,000 or less.

Technical Innovation Award

To recognize an individual, team, or organization for the development, management and implementation of a creative idea, device, process or system that enhances the goals of public works in serving the public and protecting the environment.

Top Public Works Leader of the Year Award

The Public Works Leader of the Year program seeks to inspire excellence and dedication in public service by recognizing the outstanding career service achievements of individual public works professionals and officials. The primary focus of the award is on career service to the public works profession rather than on any one single event or project.

It is the intent of this award to recognize the career service accomplishments of public works professionals and officials. Towards that end, candidates with a minimum of 10 years qualifying experience may be nominated from any of the following categories. The candidate must be in active service as of National Public Works Week of the year he or she is considered. OPWA membership is not required. Officers and members of the OPWA Board of Directors are not eligible during the time they serve in these positions.

Joe Johnson Sr Private Sector Service Award

Established (2001) to acknowledge the important role the private sector plays in providing public works facilities and services. This award recognizes outstanding individual achievement through chapter activity and outstanding corporate achievement in support of the association’s strategic plan, goals, and objectives.

Wally Wells Young Leader Award

Established (2001) to recognize and encourage young OPWA members who have demonstrated an initial commitment to the profession and the association and show potential for future growth within the association. The award promotes the concept that length of career does not necessarily indicate leadership abilities or potential for service.

Pat McDonald Distinguished Community Involvement Award

Established (2000) in memory of Pat McDonald to recognize Public Works professionals who are also leaders in their community. To encourage Public Works professionals to become active leaders in their community. To instil public trust through recognition of outstanding community leadership by Public Works professionals. To set the example for other Public Works professionals to emulate.

Management Innovation Award

To recognize an individual, team, or organization for the development, management and implementation of a creative idea, device, process or system that enhances the delivery of public works services to the public. A technical innovation involves a process, system, or program.

Merit / Terry Hardy Exemplary Service Awards

To recognize outstanding individual achievement through chapter activity and achievement in support of the Chapter's strategic plan, goals and objectives, as well as outstanding service to OPWA as a public or private sector member at the chapter level.

OPWA Supplier and Service Provider of the Year Awards

Established (2018) to acknowledge the important role that suppliers and service providers play in providing public works facilities and services. This award recognizes outstanding corporate achievement by a supplier or service provider in support of the association’s strategic plan, goals, and objectives.

This award presents an exciting opportunity for suppliers and service providers to showcase their contribution and the valuable work they provide to Public Works.
